India 2005/08
"India is a country where harmony is created by diversity. Every aspect of India’s landscape reflects this extraordinary mosaic of peoples, religions, and cultures. The ever-present wandering cows, the intoxicating smells of traditional cuisine, the gentle spirituality that Hindus weave into all elements of their lives make India a unique and inspiring land. Along India’s polluted lakes and rivers the slap of wet linen against rock is the common sound coming from the washer men and women, the Dhobis, usually members of India’s lowest caste, “The Untouchables”. The series of the “Holy Cows” is a tribute to highlight the normalcy of their ‘sacred’ presence in the bustle of Indian life. In India the cow is considered a gift from the Gods and as a holy animal it cannot be harmed. The Hindus embody spirituality, peace and acceptance in a country that still lives under the obsolete caste system." - Deborah Sinai
