Havat Hashomer’s Israeli Women Commanders

"Havat Hashomer is an unusual Israeli Military Base in the Galilee region, near Sejera, the birthplace of “Bar Giora”, the first Zionist underground organization in the early 1900's. In this army base the women are the commanders and the ones who give orders. They are young (around 20 years old) and have to deal with the “bad guys” - the boys with social, drug-related, or family problems who arrive at the base to get a chance at a new beginning. The task of these women commanders is to transform these boys into respectable men and soldiers. "Women have a more developed emotional intelligence. They know how to listen and to balance hard military training with human and maternal understanding. It is a very effective way to rescue and help these difficult boys." explains the base chief commander Ran Karny. The armed commanders share every moment of the day with the soldiers, from hard training to one-on-one sessions to talk and share new and past problems. Even these soldiers have a gun - it is a sign of responsibility. But it is not loaded. As Ynga (ex-Miss Haifa 2007) one of the commanders said “We give it to them to make them feel like real soldiers, but they have to earn our trust with hard work and commitment”. To be a commander in this base you need to go through special training and lost of daily challenges, but the results are so rewarding that it makes the hard work more accectable."
